Taekwondo
Interview with Master Lennox 7th Dan
Master Lennox could you explain what is Taekwondo?
"Taekwondo means "way of the foot and fist" in Korean, the country where it originated, it is both a martial art and a sport, encompassing everything from self defence through to its position as an Olympic sport"
A little about yourself? You are a Master of Taekwondo, how long have you been practising and what is a Master?
"I came to Taekwondo in 1976 (31 years) from another martial art and found that it was both faster and more complete and, from that time, I have dedicated myself to this form, I am also the Technical Director for the national governing body - the BTCB (British Taekwondo Control Board)"
Is Taekwondo for everyone and how do you get started?
"From 4 years to 70 years Taekwondo can be for everyone, my advice is to find a local club, go and watch and, if you like it, ask to join the next class, Taekwondo attracts people from all walks of life."
You are working with the "Sports Academy" and "Cycling4life" students - what should the students expect and what will they gain?
"They will work with people who will help them attain new goals, in fitness and confidence, discipline and expertise, they will make new friends and will be able to defend themselves outside in the world."
The tenets of Taekwondo are:
-
Etiquette
-
Modesty
-
Perserverence
-
Self Control
-
Indominatable spirit
How do these qualities transfer into life generally?
"We ensure that students of Taekwondo understand that the philosophy of Taekwondo can be applied in all aspects of life and, through dedicated training and attention to personal development, students will tend to naturally apply these same values throughout the rest of their lives."
